5.0 out of 5 stars Magical landscapes, 8 Feb 2013

This review is from: Van Gogh to Kandinsky: Symbolist Landscape in Europe 1880-1910 (Hardcover)
This is a lovely book, filled with beautiful examples of symbolist landscapes. What particularly impressed me was the amount of work by lesser known artists here, although some big names such as Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Munch and Klimt are here they in no way dominate this book. The whole book is packed with great paintings by artists I have never come across in many years of art appreciation and it's not often I feel a book has shown me something totally new.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Book, 26 July 2013

This review is from: Van Gogh to Kandinsky: Symbolist Landscape in Europe 1880-1910 (Hardcover)
This impressive book fills a major gap in art studies - we have long needed a history of visionary and symbolist landscape art in the late 19th century, filling in the broader context behind European painters such as Böcklin, Hodler, Munch, van Gogh, Gauguin and Mondrian.

A very readable work, it plots out those impulses driving visionary landscapes when modernism was percolating. The four authors - Richard Thomson, Rodolphe Rapetti, Frances Fowle & Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff - have written seven essays/chapters which chart out several overlapping themes that may be traced in symbolist landscapes:

Arcadian Idylls;
The Encounter with Nature as an Epiphany;
Dreams, Fantasies, and Nightmares;
Deserted Cities;
Visions of Cosmic Forces;
& what artists at the time called `Musical' Landscapes.

Yes, it is filled with very handsome illustrations, most of them large, and all 138 of them in glossy colour. But this is far more than a picture book. It clearly explains the ideas and motivations, as well as making connections between creators. Kandinsky is here, and so are Matisse, Klimt and de Chirico; yet the authors take pains to show connections and contrasts with figures including Puvis de Chavannes, Frantisek Kupka, Giovanni Segantini, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Franz von Stuck, James Ensor, even the dramatist August Strindberg (who painted several remarkable pictures). So many artists that have tended to be viewed in isolation are shown as part of a collective movement.

This is an invaluable book, a pleasure to read and a delight to look through.
(Of course, some readers will recognise that the book explores the territory opened by Robert Rosenblum's survey Modern Painting and the Northern Romantic Tradition: Friedrich to Rothko)

For some reason the pages were wavy? It arrived still wrapped in it's plastic covering, and once opened it still felt and looked brand new, but the pages didn't lie totally straight inbetween the covers. Not to worry, still very happy with my purchase!!
