5.0 out of 5 stars Art, mobility, and European culture, 6 April 2009
This review is from: The Age of Van Eyck: The Mediterranean World and Early Netherlandish Painting 1430-1530 (Hardcover)
This book was first published as a catalogue for an exhibition held in Bruges in 2002. It is lavishly illustrated, with 370 colour pictures (out of 375).

It is not only well presented, but it is also an interesting read for anybody who wants to know more and understand the cultural relations and exchanges throughout Europe in the 15th century and in the early 16th century. Loyal to the best tradition and practice in exhibition catalogue editing, this publication is split in two distinct parts:

-the first part is a collection of scholarly article by renowned European scholars in their field of art historical study. These articles deal not only with Flanders and Italy. Interestingly, there are also developments about Spain (Aragon and Castile), Portugal, and Burgundy. Most articles are of a decent length, which makes them really accessible without too much strain.

- the second part is a scientific catalogue of the exhibition with all exhibited works reproduced as thumbnail images in colour, with full technical information, a detailed note, provenance and bibliographic information.
