5.0 out of 5 stars Early Greek Vase Painting book, 29 July 2013

This review is from: Early Greek Vase Painting: 11th-6th Centuries BC (World of Art) (Paperback)
Why would anyone rate this or anyone rate the book five stars? Because it's what the doctor ordered and serves my purpose. Gives me some great ideas for painting my terracotta pots. In colour would have been handy, but painting some of the designbs red on black or black on red, I can't go wrong.

Many thanks,
Jacky Smith

For all students of Classical Archaeology, this book is essential reading. Here you have the foundations of what was become the finest vase painting country in the Ancient World - Greece. This would eventually give us for e.g. Exekias and the Amasis Painter from the Black Figure Period with the Achilles Painter and the Andokides Painter from the Red Figure Period. Boardman's book puts all of this and more in context.

For me this book is context for Homer (his dating and his social milieu). As such, Boardman's ultra-conservative dating is a bit of a disappointment. For example, all the other pots I had seen illustrating the blinding of Polyphemus had been dated to 650 BC. If this date were accurate and there were enough examples with the same date, we'd have a more or less rock solid date for the Odyssey. Oh, all right, a date for the Polyphemus story. Classics is a minefield! Boardman doesn't actually date any pot - he just gives a rough period for the type of pot under discussion. But that's my only criticism. The book is richly illustrated, which is good, as older pots are rarer (and more varied) than red and black figure stuff. The illustrations are monochrome, but this isn't a big problem. I haven't read the text yet. All in all it deserves at least 4 stars - I can't imagine there will be a problem with the writing.
