This review is from: The Architecture of the Italian Renaissance (World of Art) (Paperback)
I have many books on the Italian Renaissance (60+) and this ranks near the top. Concise, authoritative and with innumerable insights not found in many much longer and more expensive books.

Cannot recommend it too highly. I have immediately ordered the companion volume on art in the renaissance.

Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Refrence for Renaissance Architecture!, 13 May 2010
This review is from: The Architecture of the Italian Renaissance (World of Art) (Paperback)
I ordered this book as I was interested in architecture as a student. I was looking for a book that gave history but also included some detailed diagrams and plans. This book is great for everything. Detailed diagrams and images show cross sections and give developed information and history. Throughout the book the author explains in detail - that is easily readable - great historic knowledge and very interesting examples of real life buildings. They focus on some great buildings by a wide range of architects. I would highly reccomend this to anyone interested in great classical architecture, looking for visual and historic refrence.

This is a very sensibly written and edited text which, although it seems like and introduction, is much more than that. The very detailed text is illustrated throughout with excellent drawings, illustrations, prints and photographs showing precisely what is being discussed.

Its organisation is excellent; apart from the first chapter which is a general introduction, particularly to the Romanesque and Gothic in Tuscany, and chapter four dealing with palaces, all other chapters relate to a specific architect: Alberti, Leonardo, Filarete, Bramante, Brunelleschi, Raphael, Michelngelo to name but a few.

This is a very good introductions to the whole period, styles, architects and the Renaissance generally but it is also so much more.

On the same subjects, I would also highly recommend:

Morrissey, Jake, "Genius in the Design", Harper Collins, 2005
KING, Ross, "Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling", Penguin, 2003
KING, Ross, "Brunelleschi's Dome", Vintage, 2008

4.0 out of 5 stars A right sized volume, 3 April 2013

This book has just enough depth for the student that wants a book on this subject that can be read from start to finish. All illustrations are in black and white which although a bit boring sometimes does allow architectural detail to be distinguished. Read it next to a web browser though. Many important buildings are mentioned but not shown and I like to look them up on the web.

I bought the second-hand version of the book. It actually arrived earlier than the original date and in good condition. For those wanting more insight into Renaissance architecture, this is it. This isn't a book filled with words, but accompanied with detailed plans, sections and photographic illustrations. Recommended!
