5.0 out of 5 stars Readable and scholarly common sense., 16 April 2013

This review is from: Ivan Galamian: Principles Of Violin Playing And Teaching (Dover Books on Music) (Paperback)
So pleased to find this book which reinforces my own views and accepts the idea that lots of different fingering options should be carefully practised and then considered from a musical standpoint in every case. The notes on bowing are good too. I also like the way the author accepts that all students need different approaches.

This is a well known book. No questioning its authority
It's nice to have it at a low price... though I do have a longer version of it (different publisher)
Worthwhile.

Answers virtually all the questions a violinist is ever likely to ask. Galamian was one of the most outstanding and influential teachers of the 20th century. A must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for violin teachers and students alike, 2 May 2014

I recently purchased this book (Kindle version) after watching a tutorial by my violin hero and role model, maestro Itzak Perlman.

What drew me to this book was not only a recommendation by Mr Perlman, but also the wealth of experience presented by the author. Of particular note are the references to correlation (how mind co-ordinates the physical movement of the fingers) and the importance of understanding punctuation, vowels (smooth) and consonents (accented) type notes. The text is also amply illustrated with photographs and notation and these are very welcome indeed.

Overall I consider it money well spent.
