5.0 out of 5 stars Best period hat reference beautifully done
I've got a print of this book published in 1945. Good book for basic draft patterns and descriptions. Patterns and construction details could be improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best period hat reference beautifully done, 27 Nov. 2011
This review is from: The Mode in Hats and Headdress: A Historical Survey with 190 Plates (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
I've got a print of this book published in 1945. Until recently it has been pretty hard to come by and I'm so glad its finally been reprinted so more people can enjoy it as its such a beautiful and useful reference. I came across it whilst studying period millinery (hatmaking for those who have stumbled across this). It is full of drawings of both men and women in different styles of hats. My version starts in Ancient Egyptian and goes to 1940s. So virtually most time periods are covered, obviously not every single style of hat, because that would be tough to fit in but for period millinery and costume it is pretty invaluable. I'm not sure if all the chapters are in this version as I know there are different prints which friends own with an extra chapter, but I imagine this has them all as it is more recent. Would more than recommend this beautiful book, it is easily one of my most treasured possessions and one of the 5 things I would rescue in a fire.. and this version is I believe paperback, smaller and more compact and amazingly good value.

This review is from: The Mode in Hats and Headdress: A Historical Survey with 190 Plates (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
A must have book for those interested in theatrical millinery and period costume. Clear illustrations and information are very useful to anyone wishing to create historical hats. Also very inspiring for the fashion milliner due to the endless array of hat shapes and styles. Theatrical milliners like myself are grateful to dover for reprinting what was a rare and sought after book.
A great resource and a good starting point for those into researching the history of hats.
