3.0 out of 5 stars Historic Costumes
The book lacks illustrations and the few there are, are in black and white. You have to know the subject well to understand all the description of the costumes and you have to be a good seamstress to go through the patterns as no consruction method is explained.

I hoped to find details of the descriptions. For my taste it is not clear enough. For a beginner in the "medieval world", who never made medieval clothing before - it is useful. That is why I give only three stars. But for me it was too briefly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners, 26 Jun 2010
This review is from: Historic Costumes and How to Make Them (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
This book will give someone with a knowledge of pattern cutting a good idea of how to make the costumes within. A beginner, however, will not gain much from this book. All too often the patterns are drawn out without explanations. If there is a curve, there is no "hollow the curve 3cm between points a and b", just a picture of a curve.

To sum up; might be worth reading if you know about pattern cutting, but if you are starting out, get a book on general pattern cutting first.

the book i ve purchased looks very promising from the outside.but once inside, one can find a lot of information regarding medieval costumes and life style, whilst littler info is dedicated to other ages. especially when the book goes about from the empire era up to 1880, without hardly any draft of the patterns of the period. there are circa 14 patterns from the medieval period,4 from the tudor, 4 from elizabethan era, 5 from charles II, 8 from the 18th c, 7 from the 19th c.
i think one should be able to tell what ages are specifically considered from the cover, and the fact that you cant use the take a look inside tool before you buy it, makes it even more mysterious but at the same time doubtfull. the price is fair, compared to the quality but i expected it to be somewhat larger than the half size 4 i got. if you want to draft the patterns you have to make a grill on top of the drawing and then resize it on larger scale. it is good though that they put a long list of other costume books for whoever wants to try something a little harder and brave.

Good information, old-fashioned presentation. You need to be determined and fairly experienced to embark on these projects. For example, patterns are shown 1/8th in : 1 in, so you probably need 1in sqared paper to make your pattern up. Materials lists are sketchy and out of date so acess to a good fabric shop / haberdashery that can offer information is key.

Book gives styles and suitable fabric but actual size difficult to calculate, used another garment as guide but would be difficult on a more complicated item

I did not realy find enough information in this book. It could be more useful to someone not wishing to sew costumes.
