5.0 out of 5 stars 155 Great Magic Tricks -- Even Some Houdini, 1 Jan 2004
This review is from: Scarne on Card Tricks (Dover Magic Books) (Paperback)
John Scarne's book of card tricks is a great place for beginners to start and excellent for advanced magicians to learn more classic tricks.
Most of the tricks are explained with useful diagrams, but the description for each is immense. It gives you a great sense of what you are doing; looking at; suppose to do etc. And especially if you have a deck of cards (not supplied) infront of you it is very simple and you should never get lost.
There is no trick repeated throughout the book that has just been changed a little, unlike other books.
Some tricks require a mystical ball, or some other prop for those of you who want a trick with a bit more, but nearly every trick just requires a deck of cards (or sometimes two).
The text, however, is a little small (and mine was a bit smudged) and may be hard to read at times. Also, you wonder why the author has stated the same thing three times in a paragraph. He must also take us all for idiots - eg. Pick up the card on the left (next to your left hand) on your left hand side. I guess he wants us to be extra careful.
The best things about this book are:
--After reading many other magic books, finding the same trick is a rarity.
--Enough tricks to last you a looong time
--Loads of varied tricks, from self-working to mathmatical
--Weird pictures of men holding cards and (trying) to sit down!
Overall, an excellent and fascinating book that has my whole family going nuts asking 'How did you do that?' Great Fun.

The art of magic is over 5000 years old and card magic is probably the most popular expression - everyone loves a 'card trick'. Many magic sites sell 'one trick pony' card tricks that are generally dull, boring, and expensive - then there is Scarne. Armed with this little book and a pack of good quality cards, together with proper application of 'showmanship' you will be performing dazzling effects that will leave your audience spellbound and dumbfounded.

There's not a lot you can say about the excellent output of John Scarne that hasn't already been said. This magic here is not for the absolute beginner. You won't be disappointed with the output as there is something for everyone.

This book is an excellent addition to my card magic book collection.I have numerous books dealing with technique/sleights/ card control but this is different as it teaches magic routines requiring no sleight of hand but which are extremely effective. Within the first few pages of this book I found a real gem that is now my opener routine and always gets a great reaction. If you like card magic and are looking for strong routines that after a little practice are easy to perform then this is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The expert on cards, 22 April 2012

John Scarne is a very well-known card specialist in America and I have read his epic book on gambling which was very detailed and thorough. This card tricks book is very good and contains enough tricks to keep any magician in business. The effect of each trick is described followed by a detailed explanation of how to perform the trick. He also includes advice on patter and conjuror techniques which is much handier than some of the more simple magic books. Sometimes the explanations can be overly thorough, especially if you are an intermediate magician, but overall this book is well worth investing in.

If you are interested in card tricks then get this book. The patter is rather dated as this book was written a long time ago. However it is packed with loads of interesting self working card tricks, so no sleight of hand required. The explanations are generally clear and easy to follow. Great for magicians or anyone who just wants to learn a few easy tricks to impress their friends.
