5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTRODUCTION TO WWI POETRY!
This anthology is a great introduction to WWI poetry. It includes poems by the most famous, but also by lesser known poets of the time, who either participated in the war, or were in some way affected by it. Thus, it provides a good understanding of the poetry of that period and the different ideas about the Great War. The anthology includes several poems by each poet,...

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful introduction but no more than that
Quite a good introductory selection in its field, this one, and consider the friend's price... Strikingly, the selection has inspired itself to a large extent on the poems by Edward Thomas, Robert Graves and Thomas Hardy, though the latter was not exactly a war poet. A flaw about this selection is in that the contribution of women authors (and their poems) is limited to...

This review is from: World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others (Dover Thrift) (Paperback)
This anthology is a great introduction to WWI poetry. It includes poems by the most famous, but also by lesser known poets of the time, who either participated in the war, or were in some way affected by it. Thus, it provides a good understanding of the poetry of that period and the different ideas about the Great War. The anthology includes several poems by each poet, representative of his work and time. Also, there is a brief but informative general introduction and very good introductions for each poet, which provide basic biographical facts and link them to the war.

This great anthology includes poems by Rupert Brooke, Charles Hamilton Sorley, Edward Thomas, John McCrae, Isaac Rosenberg, Wilfred Owen, Ivor Gurney, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, Alice Meynell, Thomas Hardy, Robert Bridges, A. E. Housman, Rudyard Kipling, Walter de la Mare, and May Wedderburn Cannan.

Sadly, there is no Alphabetical List of Titles or List of First Lines, as in most anthologies. However, although this is a very affordable book, it is a really good publication and it is a pleasure to read.

In total, a great anthology, at an excellent price!

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful introduction but no more than that, 29 July 2003
This review is from: World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others (Dover Thrift) (Paperback)
Quite a good introductory selection in its field, this one, and consider the friend's price... Strikingly, the selection has inspired itself to a large extent on the poems by Edward Thomas, Robert Graves and Thomas Hardy, though the latter was not exactly a war poet. A flaw about this selection is in that the contribution of women authors (and their poems) is limited to just two. But again, consider the price, and one can't do wrong in buying this.

5.0 out of 5 stars War, uh-huh; what is it good for?, 27 May 2009
This review is from: World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others (Dover Thrift) (Paperback)
As others have said, this text is far from comprehensive, and contains quite a narrow selection of war poems. However, it is certainly cheap and should do the job if you are studying GCSE war poems from the poetry anthology.

These are good poems. I wish there were more and notes;
but it is a good starter on nice thick paper. Simon./

4.0 out of 5 stars good but no women, 14 Nov. 2001
This review is from: World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others (Dover Thrift) (Paperback)
A good - and very cheap - collection of British World War I poets. The introductions could have been more detailed - but I guess...(that at the price)...you can't expect too much. What disturbs me more is that just one woman has been included. The editor disregarded a lot of interesting poems which deal with female war experiences.
