4.0 out of 5 stars Itense depiction of rural life in Ireland makes good reading, 13 Mar 2003
In a tiny pub in rural Mayo, the peace of a tightly knit community is blown apart when a stranger stumbles in. He is young Christy Mahon and his story gets taller with each telling. The locals react to his story in unexpected ways. But it has its most powerful effect on the women of the community — in particular Pegeen Mike, the pub owner's fiery daughter.
This play caused great offence to many Irish people, as it seemed to be anti religion, making a satire of the Roman Catholic Church and its hold over Irish people. However the play makes good reading and watching as the harsh poverty of the characters’ lives contrasts with their need for gossip and desire for a hero. A skilfully written piece that both draws the audience in and captivates them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 24 Mar 2010
This review is from: The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea (Dover Thrift Editions) (Paperback)
The story is about Christy who comes to a backwater town in Mayo. He was running away after having "supposedly" killed his own father.
The people who lived in the town welcomed him with great enthusiasm. They thought what he did was heroic. Inspired by this, Christy spun more and more lies to make his story more heroic to its listeners.
Soon, Christy's father came looking for him and the town was surprised. Christy decided to kill his father once more to protect his valor. But this time, the town responded with an outrage.

This is an Irish classic and the work of this writer must not be forgotten. The language is delicious!

For me this is the work of an irish Dylan Thomas.
