4.0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to cryptography I have read
If you are already a cryppie or other security professional, this book will not add much to your knowledge. But if you are a programmer or other systems person with a desire to familiarize yourself with the field, I can't recommend this book highly enough. A reasonably solid mathematical background is required to fully understand the algorithms, but the book is...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good overall explanation if you don't want all the details
The explanations are good in this book, but if you want to build your own cryptographic algorithms, do not expect to do so with knowledge from this book. The source code in the book is incomplete, functions are missing, code syntax is wrong, and it is poorly written. It does not go into the specific details of implemting cryptography (like Large Integers, repeated...

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy the book, buy the CD for source code, 11 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
American citizens can buy Schneier's followup CD, mentioned in the book, if they want machine readable source code. Of course, strong crypto is available from many other sources on the web -- ftp.replay.com, for one. The book is useful for IS professionals, software engineers, developers and programmers who can easily extract code from the toolset between their own ears, but who still need a better grip on where the many pitfalls are in the crypto field. Schneier's survey was fairly comprehensive when it was first written, but is showing a few gaps and tatters these days, now that the AES competition is in its second round.

Great book, but it's a bit old. I recomend it though. It's good for learning the basics about cryptography and has very good recources if you want to dig in more!

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterly introduction to cryptography!, 12 April 2000
By
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
So, the cover looks good, the 758 pages of text appear daunting and and it's something your grandmother wouldn't appreciate at Christmas. Who cares about the downsides? In this case ... not me. Both encyclopaedic and an absorbing read, Schneier covers the central themes of cryptography both for the beginner and the expert with sometimes humerus and more often well written ease. If your new to the area this is an excellent start; and if you're not, it's an absorbing six shooter that you can't, gladly, hide in your pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Beginners or Advanced Crytography Nuts, 19 Dec. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
I've never seen such a compilation containing only cryptography, methodology, theory, algorythms...
It contains everything plus alpha that you ever wanted to know.
I recommend this book to anybody interested in either security or even for cryptoanalysis. To fully understand everything, you must have a good mathematical background, but even if you don't understand all of the math, it's written easy enough for the amature, but contains the guts that will interest even the professionals.
You've got to get it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended., 28 April 2003

I read this book from cover to cover while on holiday. I was astonished at the number of ways ways in which cryptography can be applied. The maths is kept to a minimum, which suited me, and the concepts were ably covered despite this. I would almost describe this as an exciting read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best cryptography book I have ever read, 27 Nov. 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
This book is one of the easiest books there is to read, but the author doesn't leave out important stuff just to make it easy to read. The only negative thing is that sometimes the math is not as well explained as the rest of the book, but it is easy enough to figure out. The author also gives his proffessional opinion on algorithms and aother protocols used in the book and tells about the known security or insecurity of the algorithms in the book. A great, very well written book, for everyon to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - starts at a 'user' level and keeps drilling down, 23 Jan. 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for anybody who wants to understand what all this buzz about crypto is about. It starts easily, is understandable, concise, and never takes itself too seriously.
If you want to understand, design or code with crypto this is a very good introduction.
The *only* criticism i would have is that it is in dire need of a newer edition - there are discussions of key-length and security that are now somewhat outdated

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative, 22 Jun. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
Crypto has intimidated me for years, mostly because its shrouded in secrecy and formulas.
Schneier makes it fun and relevant. The section on protocols is like nothing I've ever seen before. This chapter could be a worthwhile book by itself.
Schneier is humorous without being silly. He is never condescending, which is impressive, considering the incredible wealth of knowledge he presents here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Excellent, highly technical. Need Math Background., 1 Feb. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
A very good book that describes every possible aspect of cryptography from square one to Russian ciphers. Very clear and technical, a plus o me but a minnus to others. Be sure you are intrested in this topic and have a good mathematical/computer background before buying this book. If so, this is one of the greatest books you'll ever buy. It's in my top 10 in my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding tour de force, 31 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C (Computer Science) (Paperback)
This is an astounding book. It's technically very detailed but not *too* mathematical for us mere mortals. It's also enjoyable to read, which facilitates understanding of the subject.
If you're a programmer or have an interest in data security / privacy, then I strongly recommend that you buy this book.
