5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide to Crete you will need
Rather than bombard the reader with information that they don't really want or need, this Crete 'Day by Day' guide from Frommer is highly readable and has a rather personal and friendly approach to the writing; ideal reading for someone who has never visited the island before, wishing to see the best it has to offer. 3.0 out of 5 stars nice size but so so
I bought this because friends swear by them. It's a convenient format, attractive and a nice thematic approach. The restaurant and accommodation listings seemed very touristy and rather long. It's probably a good format it you want a bullet point approach to what to see rather than having to wade through lots of text. It depends what you like. I suspect I won't buy these...

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide to Crete you will need, 10 Mar 2012

This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
Rather than bombard the reader with information that they don't really want or need, this Crete 'Day by Day' guide from Frommer is highly readable and has a rather personal and friendly approach to the writing; ideal reading for someone who has never visited the island before, wishing to see the best it has to offer. To my mind it is more useful than the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet equivalents.

The guide is thoughtfully and neatly divided into useful sections covering Special Interest Tours, Urban Tours and Tours by region including ancient, modern and natural attractions, with advice on places to dine and places to stay. There is advice on how to plan your trip to see the best of the island whether it be a short trip or a much longer holiday and the final section is full of useful information such as weather, local customs, language, travel information and a potted history of Crete. There are a couple of useful maps in the back of Heraklion and Chania, the two most populated cities.

All things considered this is an excellent guide; concise, easy to navigate, entertaining to read, inexpensive and an ideal reference book to take away with you on your trip. I doubt you will need another guide. Bon Voyage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and Informative Guide Book, 21 April 2011
This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
This is a good little guide book. There is plenty of information on places to visit, where to stay and even where's good to eat!! The handy pull-out map is a great idea too.

This book mentions lots of interesting places to visit, but it also tells you about Crete's history too.

In addition to this, it also talks about the more practical things like, bus routes, taxis, banking hours, insurance, police, etc.

In short I found this great in planning how and where I'm going to visit on my holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide but avoid restaurant recommendations, 12 Jun 2012
This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
Fantastic, pocket-sized resource with lots of useful information - we used it all the time and couldn't fault it for its tips and recommendations on places to go... except for the restaurants. We went to their top recommendation in the Venetian harbour in Rethymnon (Palazzo) and were practically robbed by the restaurant who charged an unbelieveable amount of money for a single-course meal. Top tip if you are visiting - beware the 'tourist tax' added by unscrupulous restaurant owners in the more 'touristy' areas and don't go for anything on the menu, like fish, that is charged by the kilo - it's too late to quibble when you have eaten it! I would definitely suggest you take this book but use TripAdvisor for up-to-date restaurant recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throw away your old Guides - you won't need them anymore., 18 Jan 2011

As I already own a hefty guide to Crete, I was on the lookout for something a little more `portable' before planning my next jaunt and thank goodness I came across `Frommers'!

With its intelligent layout and full ranging content this was exactly the kind of `real guide' that I was looking for - well thought out and, dare I say it, humorous. The `Strategies' section was a huge help and has given me a firm basis to plan my next holiday.

Goodbye old guides - hello Frommers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant guide to the best bits of Crete, 17 Jan 2011

This is a fantastic guide book with everything you need to know to see the best of Crete. Whatever you're looking for, whether it's beach or town or visiting the historical sites Crete has to offer, you will find it here. It's not just a bland list of things to do though, but feels more like real personal recommendations. You get the impression the author really cares about whether you have a good time and wants you to love this place as much as he does.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crete Tour Guide, 4 May 2011
This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
This book was incredibly useful and I can't understand why people would buy anything else!

Not only did it give useful information about places to visit but it also gave very useful information on the way of life in Crete i.e. about paying, tips, taxis, hiring cars, taxis etc etc.

Highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars great little book, 13 Nov 2012

This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
A really usefull and sensiby sized guide.
The sections were really helpful and made it easy to locate what we were looking for by region or by the type of attraction.
Some of the notes and hints from the author were also very helpful, and some quite amusing.
The map was a little too basic, hence 4 stars, but apart from that the book is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide., 18 Jan 2011
This review is from: Frommer's Crete Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
Simple, well written and very informative. Couldn't have asked for anything more from a guide book. If all Frommers guide books are to this standard, I shall be switching to them from now on.

An informative, thoughtfully written guide that is well organised, clearly laid out and a pleasure to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the personal touches and vivid photography that bring the country to life. Well done Frommer!
