I have been singing for over 40 years, but still found this book useful, and have recommended it to a couple of friends. I have used it in conjunction with a CD of vocal exercises (by Sam West). The book fills in the main topics which people need to know about singing. Register, breathing, style etc. I like the 'Dummies' format, as it concise and gets right to the point. Also the advice is balanced and based on well-established consensus approaches. I bought it at discount, but even at full price it is much less expensive than one lesson.

Book & CD great. Nice easily understood text. Logical lessons and exercises and used in conjunction with the CD very useful.
1st one had to be returned as the CD was faulty but Amazons system for returns and replacements is excellent.

This is a very satisfying book which put whatever I knew about singing into perspective. I joined a choir about a year ago and have been doing breathing and singing exercises with the group but wasn't sure how to replicate them at home. With this book and CD I can practice every day and be conscious of why exactly I'm doing the particular exercise.

The writing is very clear and humorous but also detailed and pithy. Sometimes I pick it up and read a chapter just for the fun of it. As the writer says you can dip in and find helpful tips and instructions but it is also carefully graded so that you can follow the instructions chapter by chapter.

A wonderful way to be introduced into singing.

This is a good study book. It starts with posture, carries on with an explanation about the mouth, the vocal cords. Then it takes you through basics of opening your mouth to project your voice. Plenty of exercises matched with the CD. The CD included with the book is also a good warm up of your voice. I engaged with this book and tried to apply this at church where I am a chorister (adult one!) The book is progressive, teh tips are really wroth their salt for a beginner like me. For me it was important to know how to project your voice. it was important to understand how to open your mouth like in the start of a yawn. There are also explanations of what to do when you learn a new song and takes you through to performance level. It covers all types of music in their summary and shows you the difference between an opera singer and a pop music singer. Ther's advice for all types of singers. I think the book is comprehensive, meaty and easy to follow. If you put the time, you will certainly improve on your voice and take more pleasure in singing. Recommended

I really liked this. It is onc of the best vocal tutor books I have seen for awhile. The section on belting is probably not for beginners. Apart from that - SMASHING with a superb CD.

I'm not usually tempted when the price is above £5, I know I'm a bit tight. But the reviews of this item, plus my experience of the Dummies range told me this was worth getting. I love singing and part of the practice element is what I miss from doing a regular weekly class. The accompanying CD offers me a regular scales vocal workout and solid pronounciation technique. I practice it when I am cooking, cleaning or just at a loose end. Even my partner has started to join in, and the animals seems to love the newly found sonorous qualities to home life at the moment too. I have since invested in Singstar Playstation game, a game with microphones and sing off battles - all the neighbours are coming over to have a go. Doing the exercises and reading through the workbook has provided me the perfect technique to use in battle with my singing opponents. They end up horse, dizzy or their phrasing gets completely wonky - I am, on the other hand, in control, breathing and have plenty of time to get the phrased out and hold sustained notes. Love it, don't look at the price just get it if you are a keen amateur singer and have no time or spare cash to get yourself to a regular class.
