5.0 out of 5 stars Best review of deception detection available, 16 July 2010
This review is from: Detecting Lies and Deceit: Pitfalls and Opportunities (Wiley Series in Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law) (Paperback)
This is a comprehensive, balanced and up to date review of research on detecting deception, written by a world leading researcher. It is well written and should appeal to a general educated readership as well as researchers and practitoners. The book should not be mistaken for one of the many airport-shop self-help guides which this field seems to be infested with. Read one of them and you will merely add misinformation and noise to your understanding (e.g., the concept of using body language to 'read' peoples' intentions is generally speaking nonsense), whereas this book will give you usable information both about the pitfalls of detecting deception (people, including law enforcement personnel, are much worse at it than they believe) and the promise of approaches that do seem to improve the reliability of lie detection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, informative book; good for studies and people interested in lie detection., 27 Mar 2012

This review is from: Detecting Lies and Deceit: Pitfalls and Opportunities (Wiley Series in Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law) (Paperback)
I recently purchased Aldert Vrij's book for a friend's birthday gift. As a forensic psychology student, I already own a copy of Vrij's work, and have read it many times. The book is extremely interesting; the finer details have greatly improved my studies, however it is captivating in a way that I can casually read it on a day out at the beach etc.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in forensic psychology or lie detection. It is suitable for anyone; not just academics or scholars, and I really enjoyed this book.
Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Open Your Eyes to The Lies!, 25 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An accessible read for an academic work, he de-bunks some of the myths about lie detectors and the abilities of our law enforcement agencies to sniff out the porkies! If you want to know just how much deception is floating around out there and how to better detect it better than our law enforcers, this is the one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and comprehensive summary of the field, 17 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Detecting Lies and Deceit: Pitfalls and Opportunities (Wiley Series in Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law) (Paperback)
Wow. This book is exhaustive in its detail and rigorous in its approach of all the major branches of deception detection study and practice. From the routinely debunked polygraph to the more robust CBCA and many other areas. It ends on a summary of what works and what doesn't (for the given margins of error) and where we might go from here.
If you are in this research area, or a curious layman, you need this book.
There's been some interesting developments in this field since it was written and its worth keeping an eye on Aldert Vrij's publishing feed on the Uni website as well.

Great condition as expected and arrived quickly.

Side note (not related to the book): I think it's ridiculous to have a word count requirement in reviews since i can sum it up in just a few words.
