This book is one of the best, if not thee best, IT book I have read in my 13 year career.

With 600+ pages, my preconception was that this would be another book full of diagrams and repetition but no, this book is eloquently written, succinct and covers all of the new LPIC-1 objectives.

I just wish there was an LPIC-2 equivalent - how about it Roderick?

This book covers all of the topics included in the LPIC-1 exam and more.

It delivers the material in a well laid out manner and does not brush over any topics.

Comes supplied with a test engine, flash cards and an electronic copy of the book.

Extremely good value for money.

All in all there is no better LPI level one book available.

I successfully used this book to pass CompTIA Linux+ and LPIC1 (it was a combined award exam at the time). To be fair I already knew much of the subject material so I used this book more as a revision guide rather than a learning book. In that respect it was fine, it provides a comprehensive coverage of the exam objectives.

I don't feel the book is well writen, offering very little detail about anything, and often ends each section/tool with "see the man page for more".
Infact, if you had the time and patience you could just use "--help" on every command you can think off, and then you have a free electronic version of this book.

That said, having this book helps to provide you structure, and gives you the chance to read it where ever you like (as long as you don't mind carrying a fat paperback with you), you can also be confident that your study is inline with the LPIC level 1, rather than you going off in a different direction.

It does the job, just isn't a great read and doesn't really provide you any information that isn't freely available on your Linux docs already. If you need structure to learn, take this book, or something similar.

as i knew what i would get for the money i paid, there's not much to say about it, apart from the fact that a little more time may have gone to packaging the item. the cd included with the book was broken upon arrival.
