5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely usefull
This book is extremely usefull when your new to CodeIgnitor. It gives a good explanation on what MVC (Model, View, Controller) means and how it works. After that you dive into building your own demostration application (a webstore) by the hands of the author. Very well explained and easy to follow. Now 1 year later I'm doing a huge project in codeignitor for a company. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not brilliant
I think this book is quite typical of many Wrox books in requiring you to code a complete example in order to understand the topic. This is fine for some but when you're trying to code a new project then the concepts should be backed up by some example code. Not everyone has time to learn by using someone else's complete example.

I find Apress books are usually...

I think this book is quite typical of many Wrox books in requiring you to code a complete example in order to understand the topic. This is fine for some but when you're trying to code a new project then the concepts should be backed up by some example code. Not everyone has time to learn by using someone else's complete example.

I find Apress books are usually very good at getting this right and O'reilly books are usually good.

Instead of so many screenshots and CSS files a few more diagrams would have helped greatly.

As previous reviewers have found the book helpful it's obviously horses for courses as we all learn, work and think in different ways.

After that you dive into building your own demostration application (a webstore) by the hands of the author. Very well explained and easy to follow. Now 1 year later I'm doing a huge project in codeignitor for a company. I must say that with basic knowlegde of php, the very well documentated codeignitor system and this book as referance it goes quick and smooth! I highly recommend everybody that wants to start in codeignitor but doesn't know how to read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer in MVC methodology, 11 April 2010

I wish I had read this book before I started building my personal website. MVC is a wonderful methodology, and will keep your code nice and neat for the next person who needs to look at it (who will probably be you), and CodeIgniter is a lovely framework within which to think about stuff in an MVC way.

MVC is also very much geared towards Agile development. Not only is Agile good for changing specs, it's fast and efficient too: I've been an Agile developer professionally for over a year now, and I love it!

Some of the SQL given is faulty: in particular, I've come across a few quote marks that should not be there. However, given that this book is not a beginners' book, and doesn't pretend to be, this is forgivable, and not quite enough to take a star off its rating.

Perhaps some words on test-driven development and/or PHPUnit would have been great: that would have gone hand in hand with MVC development, but that may have made this book unmanageable as an introduction to MVC.

Overall, an excellent book, and nicely written. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about CodeIgniter, 29 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Professional CodeIgniter (Wrox Professional Guides) (Paperback)
This book is fantastic, this book will basically tell you all you need to know for a PHP developer to be able to code in CodeIgniter. You do need previous knowledge of PHP though, but there are plenty of books to teach you that.

Wrox books rock!
