Not for the UK,
By Jimboy (Bedford UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
I belived this would be a good guide for picture taking, with the Sony Alpha 700. It is a better printed copy of the user manual, but with no good advise or tips which are different from the supplied manual. Also most concerning, it is for Sony Cameras supplied to the American market. There are features mentioned which do not exsist on UK or Europen models. I have confirmed this with Sony direct, but fail to understand and they could not explain why there are such variances. The book advert should carry a warning. As a new Sony A700 user I was dissapointed. I am an experienced SLR and DSLR user and it was a specific model guide I was looking for, not a glossy manual. My 3 stars given are for the printing quality, and basic language for first time DSLR users ever in the USA.

I have other books in this series. They are well written and (in most cases) provide clear descriptions and explanations of the camera's features, controls etc. They also provide useful tips on various areas of photography in which you may be interested, without being condesceding, over-simplistic or unnecessarily complex. They do not replace the camera's manual but are a useful addition as they are fairly inexpensive.A worthwhile purchase to be recommended.

The information that comes with the camera is quite drab and uninformative, so I got this book to enable me to use the camera competently off the auto setting. It hasn't failed in this task. Well written, pretty comprehensive and good to dip in and out of. Goes beyond the working of the camera to include the basics of photography such as light and composition. Also includes a section on how to take different types of images (action, low-light, macro, portraits...), including camera settings and lens used. Still not 100% okay with the D-range optimiser, which although covered, is a little vague and the one area that isn't comprehensive. That said, I'm happy with the other areas covered and I'd buy it again.

This book reiterates the Instruction Manual, as has been remarked, but does so in more detail and in a more readable way. It is to the point and while it could go into more detail it would perhaps become a bit long winded and less accessible. I find it very useful just as it is.
