Rarely have I been able to work my way through a teach-yourself type book page by page, without getting bored or skipping forward to find something more interesting. However, this book has kept my attention from cover to cover and i have really been able to develop a solid grounding in VB2008 and ASP.Net 3.5, from very little knowledge beforehand.

There are occasional misprints, but the author is contactable and extremely helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is taking their first steps with Visual Basic 2008 but make sure you have got a full working version of Visual Studio Professional, or you wont be able to follow along with the examples.

Like in most of my reviews a part of my current course at college is sub-ranged into programming and the Dummies Brand is aimed at people taking steps to write and learn in a certain procedure unlike other book's which may be aimed at advanced programming in mind,

Visual Basic is a great language to learn and the Dummies Book tries to teach The beginner how to write,Edit modify and get the 'sudo coding for VB off the bat and correct' However I did find it quite annoying and learnt more from the current reference Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Step by Step Book/CD Package (PRO- Step by Step Developer) pehaps because the coding in the book was not found on the website which the book asks you to download to pratice however Just skimming through the book and praticing what it teaches pays off in time in your new education of Vusual Basic

It is a good way to start learning VB2008 im not flaming the book. I just wish the rescources from the website was updated,However in Vb it is all about the Coding and design to your programs so in that department it is a good investment to learn from

I have many Dummies Guides in programming languages such as C and Java and there clearly explained and would reccomend them for the novice learner starting VB

I purchased this book around two years ago as an introduction to programming, unfortunately I really didn't find it helpful. Broad leaps are made from some topics to other without any explanation of the links in-between. Much of the book is spent embodying the virtues of visual basic as a language without explaining how any of these features can be used.

I pretty much ignored this book, and looked online instead. I soon discovered other languages - such as C++, which have far better documentation. If you are learning to program, look for a book which clearly explains the fundamental building blocks. This book didn't even explain things like if and else, much less variables and functions. These are core parts of programming and help to ensure that you write efficient code - whilst this may not seem important, I am now employed to program micro-controllers, and every byte of memory counts.

So my advice, don't buy this book, it won't help you, just make you quiet confused.

This is poor some examples dont work. Its definatley not for beginners most of it - waste of money big time! Also,[...] isnt online anymore so its a useless companion to the book as it isnt there!!!

Some useless stuff in it, some bits are good but this doesnt teach you the languaue of VB. Also, the IF else examples are rubbish and this is explained well. Avoid

Quite poor. The author wastes a lot of paragrapghs telling you there will be more about that later. Consequently he doesn't have enough space to explain anything at all well. I felt I didn't really learn any more than when I started

I bought this book expecting to increase my knowledge in Visual Basic, as I already knew variables, IF statements, loops and the likes. But, with every other 'for Dummies' book, it is so boring and doesn't have enough productivity (i.e. letting me make something useful out of Visual Basic), so not very motivating to carry on. In my opinion, I'd completely stay away from 'for Dummies' books, they're a waste of money and time. Somewhat okay for a few chapters, but that's for the basics only.

The book says it assumes no previous knowledge of programming.
I got a 3rd of the way through and was none the wiser as it assumed you were already a competent programmer.
Not a beginners book at all which is how it is advertised.

This book was too advanced for my purposes, but the delivery and condition were first rate
