This review is from: Discovering the Solar System (Paperback)
Everything you could possibly want to know about the local `bit' of space in which we live is covered in this up-dated second edition of Jones' standard textbook. All aspects of the solar system - how it may have been born, details of the sun, planets, asteroids, comets, meteorites, the Oort cloud, etc., etc. are covered in detail - with individual chapters on what goes on inside planets, on their surfaces and (when they've got one) within their atmospheres. Jones includes the occasional equation, but if you're non-mathematical you can skip these bits because the text and diagrams etc. fully explain things anyway. For those of you who like to test your knowledge, questions are interspersed throughout the book - and if you fail the test - Jones' gives full answers so that you can see where you went wrong. The book is lavishly illustrated with colour and monochromatic images and line diagrams and is written in an easy, readable style. The book would be ideal as a set book for a university course on the planets, sun and solar system, but is also essential reading for ANYONE (interested general reader, amateur astronomer, professional scientist) who would like to understand more about the Earth's immediate environment. If you only buy one book about the solar system - buy this one - you won't need another.
