I was late to Gurney but he is wonderful, in word and music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest 20 cent. composers and poets, 6 April 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Gurney: Everyman's Poetry: 13 (Everyman Poetry) (Paperback)
A very readable and accessible poet and composer who wrote poems purely for himself rather than in hope of publication. They are meticulous, beutifully crafted, and surprisingly modern in feeling. It is strange that it is only now that he is getting to be known for his poems and exquisite songs

5.0 out of 5 stars A tour de force, the standard for the next century., 18 Feb 1999
By A Customer
George Walter's biography of Ivor Gurney is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is intimately crafted with the care and skill of a first class novelist. However, the literary pinache could not be complemented more perfectly than it is with the historical accuracy and accessibility which Walter manages to weave into the text. Gurney's star is truly in the ascendant and Walter is the trail blazing genius who will elegantly fix it to the firmament. This is not only a book about the young poet/composer from Gloucester, it is also a treatment of British culture, a long awaited and much needed synthesis of war and experience, literature and music. The question of why the publishing world has waited so long to follow up Michael Hurd's good but limited 1978 biography has been answered. They were waiting for George Walter to put pen to paper.
