5.0 out of 5 stars The start of the end of apartheid
In this book, D'Oliveira - one of the greatest cricketers to play for England - tells about his early life in South Africa, about his frustrations in not being able to play first class cricket because of his colour and of his move to England, where he played in the Lancashire League before joining Worcestershire and being capped by England.

All he ever wanted...

5.0 out of 5 stars The start of the end of apartheid, 23 Jun 2013
This review is from: Time to Declare: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
In this book, D'Oliveira - one of the greatest cricketers to play for England - tells about his early life in South Africa, about his frustrations in not being able to play first class cricket because of his colour and of his move to England, where he played in the Lancashire League before joining Worcestershire and being capped by England.

All he ever wanted to do was to play cricket. It was his determination and single mindedness that was the start of the end for apartheid. As far as possible he kept out of politics, but when he was - belatedly - picked for the team to tour South Africa in 1968 followed by the apartheid regime's refusal to allow a team containing non-white players to tour South Africa, a sporting boycott was all but inevitable.

D'Oliveira comes across as a man of great dignity and of much humility, and acknowledges the debt he owes to others, including the cricket commentator John Arlott.

D'Oliveira began his international test career at an age when most other cricketers would be on the verge of retirement. Just think what he could have achieved if he had been playing test cricket in the 1050s and early 1960s!

Two final points: it could be argued that without the events that led to the sporting boycott, apartheid could have lasted longer than it did and its end could have been violent. Nelson Mandela could have ended up dying in prison.

Finally, surely it is about time this excellent book was reprinted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, 30 Dec 2011
This review is from: Time to Declare: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
Ironically, I had just started to read this book for a second time when Basil sadly passed away. It is an easy read and well put together by Pat Murphy who is always entertaining. I'm sure a lot more could have gone into the book, but it is an interesting read particularly in relation to the D'Olivera Affair of 1968 when South Africa entered a perriod in the sporting wilderness due to them refusing to allow Basil to play in a test series in South Africa. Basil shows great humility in the book, it is just a shame his undoubted talent was not able to come to the fore sooner.
