Dan Savage has written a scathing and carefully researched investigation into the persuit of happiness in Modern America (or should that be Post Modern America?). He looks closely at each of the Seven Deadly Sins (some he observes, some he commits) and meets some of the people who the religious right love to bash and use as a political football.

Saying it that way makes this sound like a serious tome but Savage has written a witty and engaging book. He's well worth searching out and having a read.

Dan Savage is a most enjoyable writer, who apparently runs a no-holds-barred agony uncle column on a Seattle newspaper. His loathing of the self-righteous and pompous right-wing pontificators who say America is going to hell in a handcart is wonderfully and wittily expressed. To review the 7 deadly sins, he experiences them himself - finding places where he can indulge gluttony, reflecting at leisure on the best way of enjoying sloth, and so on - it's a leisurely read. The only trouble I found was how, whilst reading it, to hold the book so others on the tube could see the word Gomorrah on the cover.
