This deserves 5 stars because it is awesome, stirring, touching, sad and with a conscious torn hero who is believable and very human despite his special talents. One of the best in the series, it grips the reader from the very first page.
Upon his return to the Ozarks, Valentine is horrified to find it overrun by Kurians and their underlings. In a desperate bid to get his men to the safety of the Southern Command, he and his brave band infiltrate the new command post of the enemy. Yet his plan fails to go smoothly and swiftly he must make up a new one, to "stick a wrench in their gears" and help restore the Free Territories. But uprisings are rare and successful ones ever rarer. Valentine knows that few of his people will survive, most likely they will all die, including himself.
