This review is from: Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner's Guide to Treatment (Paperback)
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FS) is a complex condition with multiple possible causes. These include genetic, biochemical, psychological and biomechanical features, and as a result any successful treatment will have to address these various issues to help manage this common illness. One of its main presenting features that physical therapists need to consider is the issue of hypermobility, as this will invariably show itself as one of the principal clinical problems. FS sufferers complain of spontaneous pain in a wide variety of joints, that become part of a revolving door of acute inflammation followed by slow resolution, followed by stiffness and less severe pain, then very gradual resolution. Before the next episode of the cycle recommences.

Chaitow's text provides a comprehensive overview of most of the pertinent features and includes a relevant evidence base for manual therapists to research further. I liked the text as it was straight and to the point, written clearly and providing useful ideas upon which further research needs to explore.

Many primary care practitioners including GP's, osteopaths, physiotherapists, podiatrists and chiropractors will benefit from this book, as it provides a broad base to start to help those who have to learn to live with this condition. FS is not hopeless, but to obtain good results and a realistic idea of what treatment can offer, you need to know all the issues that underly this problem. This work undoubtably helps in this regard and is to be recommended, though not for the lay reader.
