5.0 out of 5 stars Solid SF with a hint of Jack Vance
Entertaining SF with less of the so-called 'military SF' and more focus on aspects on society and travel. Well developed characters with side-characters that comes and goes and a never ending flow of events and turns makes this book (as well as the first book 'Runner') an entertaining read. In some ways it reminds me of Jack Vance. Recommended!

Slightly disappointing follow-up to Runner

This book picks up pretty much where 'Runner' finished. The Runner Jak Rebo, the sensitive variant Lonni Norr and heavy variant Bo Hoggles are transporting the Artifical Intelligence entity called Logos to the planet of Socket so that it can attempt to reinstate the Stargate network system that once connected the galaxy. Each character has their own reasons for the journey and certain hidden agendas. The young messiah from the first book has been accepted by the church as the reincarnation of their dead leader and plays no part in this story other than having given them tokens which should ensure they can get shelter and protection from agents of the church wherever they are.

The sensitive variant Lonni Norr is still occasionally 'possessed' by the spirit of Milos Lysander , ex-leader of the Techno Society who was also the Emperor Hios in a previous incarnation and who was responsible for establishing the system of stargates. The Techno Society under the leadership of the crippled Omar Tepho still want to capture Logos and use it to control the stargate network system for their own ends. Tepho has sent two assassins Shaz and Du Phan along with another sensitive Dyson who is in contact with the dead Techno Society Agent Jevan Kane, plus a number of mechanical men to follow the group and try and recover Logos.

Nicely written with some fantastic descriptions of the various worlds and the results of the ongoing steady decline of mankind. As mentioned elsewhere there are certain similarities between this and some of Jack Vance's work, in particular the Durdane, Planet of Adventure and Demon Princes series. Not quite as good as the original book but it does continue the story.
