4.0 out of 5 stars Good for 'Confessional Comedy'
Some reviewers are saying this book is dated (just look at the hairstyles!!) but I think it's great on 'confessional comedy' which for some people never goes out of fashion. It also guides you through the steps of deciding to do stand up, putting an act together, getting on stage and a count down from 2 hours before performing. Also talks through different styles eg...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not The Best For Today
Maybe this book was ok when it came out but there's more to comedy today than only punchlines. I got more out of How To Be A Working Comic and Successful Stand-Up Comedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for 'Confessional Comedy', 1 Dec. 2010

Also talks through different styles eg political and characters and looks at the emotional side of doing comedy, again something that will never date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...to a point..., 7 Sept. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
While the book takes you through the basics of developing your skills and an act, it can be lacking in areas. If you get stuck at one of the steps, and nothing will work for you, it's practically impossible to go onto the next step. All the workshop sections are built off each other, so it's hard to skip one if you're having trouble. Other than that, it's an excellent book for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a college course, with homework assignments., 22 Jun. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
I wanted her to teach me, not just talk about her experiences. I wanted examples of good and bad lines and jokes. I wanted to know how to judge a good line from a bad one and how to change bad to good. I got it all. She writes well about all of the topics. She is a good writer, funny, believable, and encouraging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aspiring Comedians: Read This Book!, 1 Jun. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
If one is at all interested in becoming a standup comedian, or simply becoming a better public speaker this is the best book on the market. In my quest to become a stanup comedian at the age of 17 this book was recommended to me by the manager at Caroline's in NYC and by several of the comics back stage. A must-read for anyone having toruble getting started in the world of stand-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best tool to have if you are wanting to be a stand up., 26 Aug. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
The book was a guide that helped me understand the basics of standup comedy. I performed stand up for eight years, and the book gave me the foundation that took me from open mic nights to the Improv. So if you want to be a standup this is a good first step. I still use her book in my marketing business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand-up Comedy, 27 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
An excellent book for those who have been gigging for a while - or are thinking about it.
Very American - especially the venues and examples - but nevertheless, some great tips on how to deal with not getting laughs and all the other joys of Stand-Up

Excellent value for money

5.0 out of 5 stars 'THE BOOK' to get you started !!, 7 Aug. 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
Okay, you've decided to give stand-up a whirl, one problem -- you have no material.

Lets see, no material ... no experience.

Stand Up Comedy: The Book simplifies the world of stand up and gives you a great base to start from.
The workshop exercises give you the edge over those comedians using a 'trial and error method' and will help ease the terror of that first open mike!

Give this book a read first!
This is the easiest method of dredging that funny material into a great opening monologue.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book of the bunch!, 3 Mar. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand up Comedy: The Book (Paperback)
This was one of the first books I read on stand-up comedy and thought the book was OK until I read other books.
I didn't like the writing style because I felt it tried to be funny and informative at the same time - and most of the jokes were pretty lame anyway. Although I am sure the Author is funny on stage, I got the impression that she was trying to impress the reader with how funny she could be without quite pulling it off. The funniest things in the book are the advice or jokes of other comedians and it is probably not worth buying just for that.
I got very little out of this book compared to other books and I felt the book was too simplistic and only scratched the surface of Stand-Up - kind of like 'An Idiots Guide to Stand-Up'.
I would recommend 'Successful Stand-Up Comedy: Advice from a Comedy Writer' by Gene Perret and 'Zen & The Art of Stand-Up Comedy' by Jay Sankey over this book as I feel they pay more than lip-service to a lot more important aspects of Stand-Up like Character, Delivery and how to write for Stand-Up.
