5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked classic., 11 Aug. 2001

... Although it is quite a short title it fired up my imagination for a long time. The story follows a race of lizard-like creatures who have built up an empire, now under threat. The threat comes from a collection of insect races, think 'Starship Troopers' for a picture. These races are also expanding their empire, and this leads to the 'Bug Wars'of the title. In the first half of the book we follow the lead character's experiences of being stranded on a bug-held planet. His team have limited resources and experience, but no shortage of enemies. The second half of the book takes the fight to the bugs. Having been rescued, our hero leads a scientific mission to observe an ant colony. Needless to say, the ants have a few tricks up their sleeves for the lizards to deal with. The whole thing is like a glimpse into a much larger saga. Having grown up on Star Wars and Dune the pan-galactic style really appealed to me. The lead character's difficulties in dealing with his team mates, organising them, and coping with the changes in the Empire are absorbing. Buy this if you like grand visions in your sci-fi, as well as tough combat and well defined characters.

(REAL NAME)
I had already owned a copy of this book but over the years and after so many re-reads it had fallen apart hence buying a replacement. As for the style of the book, well for me its a brilliant read with a really strong and defined character as Rahm (he is the main character) who almost makes you feel you are living his experiences through the telling of his career - but I'm sure this is the skill of writing from the author. As for the content, its a story of survival of a species (reptiles) against the domination of a galaxy from insects (leapers, wasps, ants) with many battles and encounters which will decide which species prevails. However its not just a book describing war it also works on another level for how a species of reptiles develops changing attitudes towards its own society.
If you like sci-fi and escapism then this is a book you would enjoy.

If ever there was a book deserving for the big screen then this is it!
