This long series of American books is about 3 children who discover a magic world under the stairs of their home. Sounds schmaltzy but isn't. If you liked the famous five as a child, you probably will like this too, it's wholesome and upbeat. It persuaded my nearly-8-year-old son, who's bright but not mad about reading just now, to read it twice where he wouldn't get stuck into other highly regarded childrens books like Michael Morpurgo. Seems an odd partner for his other passions, ie Gameboy and Jackie Chan, but he's keen to read the next one so that's fine by me.
Quite large print and the odd mono illustration make it seem less daunting too.
