5.0 out of 5 stars Really good revision book, 24 Aug. 2011
This review is from: WJEC GCSE English Literature: Student Book (Paperback)
It's a bit of a jungle of books out there if you don't quite know what you are looking for and only have the name of the exam board to go on! I teach English and get asked a lot about books for WJEC GCSE revision. I'd always go for one approved/endorsed by the exam board, which are the ones I will recommend here.

If your child is studying for the WJEC GCSE in English they will need the 'WJEC GCSE English and English Language: Student Book' by Ken Elliot in either the Higher or Foundation version, depending on which paper they are likely to sit (higher being best for A*-B).

If they are also doing the additional English Literature GCSE, they will need the 'WJEC GCSE English Literature: Student Book' by Margaret Graham. This is not differentiated into higher and lower. It is important to get these two as these are for the newly changed 2008 onwards spec. Any books printed before this date will be useless as they will refer to the requirements of the old exam spec.

One more book you may wish to consider is one which helps with the studying of the set poems on the syllabus. I have both the 'WJEC GCSE Poetry Collection Student Book (WJEC English Poetry Collection)' by Ms Caroline Bentley-Davies and the 'YNA4 GCSE WJEC Poetry Collection (York Notes). The latter is tailored to the spec and very student-friendly; I think the quality of the analysis is a little better too so it is a good bet for a more able student.

Hope this helps someone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful for the Exam, 16 Jun. 2012

This review is from: WJEC GCSE English Literature: Student Book (Paperback)
I bought this to tutor a student who came to me for private lessons because she was getting very good English literature lessons, and no help at all on how to approach the exam and assessments. This book is a great resource if you are in that situation.

The reason I took one star off is because the book has to use extracts from all the set texts, so students will only find one or two pages on their own books, which is confusing if you are working on your own.
