5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a tennis memoir
I collect tennis players' biographies, but this was a different category altogether and a complete privilege to read. I was a fan of Ashe in his playing days but midway through I found this rather sanctimonious and pretentious, especially after reading his diary of a year on the tennis circuits with all its high and fast life

I collect tennis players' biographies, but this was a different category altogether and a complete privilege to read. This decent, educated man shares his philosophical insights on race, AIDS, politics and spirituality. Too bad he never lived to see the presidency of Barack Obama, who I'm sure would have been inspired by this book. It's a shame he's no longer around to mentor the Williams sisters or Tiger Woods. This is an inspirational book by a truly exceptional human being. I have just finished reading it and it's wonderful that the reforms he hoped for in American health care have just been brought to fruit by President Obama.

A thoroughly honorable man and proper sportsman of integrity.
There are fabulous and touching words on the final page said
to his daughter which will have every reader sobbing but
leaving them hopeful.
