5.0 out of 5 stars Crime in S.C.
Don Winslow writes interesting stories, covering different topics. Not all of them will appeal to everyone. The Winter of Frankie Machine was excellent, and is just begging to be made into a movie. The Gentlemen's hour features the same characters of a previous book-The Dawn Patrol. The story is set in southern California and has many surfing allusions. The terms and language of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Aint gonna be no next time Mikey...
I don’t know that I really needed to read this book. It is very similar to his last in this series, i.e. lots of surfing terms, an interesting will-she won’t-she end up in bed with his new fancy scenario, a lawyer, who is several rungs above him on the San Diego society ladder and a well-plotted real estate scam for him to work out and then get into danger in...

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find........, 5 Dec. 2010
This review is from: The Gentlemen's Hour (Paperback)
I first bought a Don Winslow novel when I chanced upon Bobby Z back in 1997. It was GREAT. However, my attempts to find more of his work on Amazon were thwarted by the fact that there seemed to be a soft porn author of the same name and then that his titles weren't published in the UK.

I managed to get California Fire and Life as my first ever second hand buy on Amazon and have read every one of his novels since.

I'd have to rate every single on of them 5 stars - how many authors can you say that about?!

Gentlemen's Hour is probably best read after Dawn Patrol (just in case you didn't know it was a follow on). Both are great - characters good, storytelling good and use of langauge to bring a smile to your face every now and then.

Don Winslow is in a great groove in his career - long may it continue.........

I really liked this book.

I loved reading about the surfers, and the detective part was good as well.
