This review is from: Burning Heart (Doctor Who Missing Adventures) (Paperback)
Prolific Doctor Who novelist Dave Stone is a 'Marmite' writer, and to be honest I err on the negative side after reading several of his efforts. The abysmal Virgin New Adventure Sky Pirates! (Doctor Who New Adventures) was the first Dave Stone novel I read, and it's 'wacky' humour left me entirely cold. Death and Diplomacy (New Doctor Who Adventures) was marginally better, but the broad comedy spoofing of the detective genre in Ship of Fools (New Adventures) was even more dire than Sky Pirates.

This entry into the Virgin Missing Adventures is placed fairly early on in the Sixth Doctor's tenure - coming after Doctor Who - Vengeance on Varos [DVD] [1963], and the Time Lord is still showing traces of the borderline sociopathic tendencies that began to emerge after his most recent regeneration. This leads to The Doctor and his companion Peri splitting up when they arrive in a disintegrating cosmopolitan society on future Earth, and they have to contend with the all pervasive Church of Adjudication, which is brutally enforcing it's will, as well as a spate of bizarre mutations affecting the society's inhabitants.

The novel again has all the hallmarks that Stone displays in his writing; broadly dark comedy, bizarre creations, Sci-fi settings and a host of confusing sub-plots. I am sure that Dave has his fans, but on this evidence they must be very few and extremely loyal.
