3.0 out of 5 stars Messing with your head, 21 Feb 2006
This review is from: Head Games (New Doctor Who Adventures) (Paperback)
Although the synopsis talks about 'a deranged version of The Doctor' this novel isn't really about The Doctor; it's more about his companions. Roz Forrester and Chris Cwej, the two agents who joined the crew of the TARDIS after 'Original Sin', begin to see just how manipulative and shadowy their guide really is. Chris falls in love with Kat, whose planet is due to be destroyed thanks largely to The Doctor's interventions, whilst Roz and Benny are caught up in a race to save the Earth's Queen and prevent a homicidal young man from wreaking his own brand of havoc throughout the universe. This story returns to the themes of The Land of Fiction and is extremely self-referential in a way that the last few New Adventures' novels haven't been. This aside, Lyons manages to weave a tale that is both cryptic and darkly disturbing whilst avoiding completely baffling the reader, although he comes close - hence the title 'Head Games'.

I enjoyed it for the most part, just don't expect to be on the edge of your seat because it really isn't that gripping.
