5.0 out of 5 stars The first of the Dr. Who handbooks that started the series., 8 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Doctor Who Handbook: The Fourth Doctor (Dr Who Handbooks) (Paperback)
Doctor Who - The Handbook: The Fourth Doctor is another entertaining read in the Doctor Who series of Handbooks. This volume focuses on the Tom Baker era from 1974 to 1981. As usual, the regular features of the handbooks are in this one: a focus on Tom Baker himself, a look at the character of the fourth Doctor, story summaries and reviews, rewriting the myth, a look at production development, the making of the story "The Brain of Morbius", etc. This book goes through 9 chapters of thoroughly researched material done by the authors trio of David J. Howe, Mark Stammers, and Stephen James Walker. This is an excellent piece of reference work on Doctor Who's most famous incarnation, The Fourth Doctor, from how Tom Baker defined the series to even how his departure from the show changed the series' future. The Tom Baker era made Doctor Who the large phenomenon it is today. People recognize Tom Baker as the definitive Doctor. This book is a terrific trip back to that time and reveals the behind-the-scenes development of the Doctor with the long scarf, curly hair with the big eyes and huge smile. Read it and enjoy reliving the Fourth Doctor's era. You won't regret it. Published in 1992 this was the very first volume in the Doctor Who Handbook series.

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Handbook:The Tom Baker Years 1974-1981.
Paperback 256 pages.

Review.
This Handbook features a whole wealth of information about the long Scarfed teeth & curls Fourth Doctor & the eccentric genius who played him the enigmatic Tom Baker who went on to become the longest serving Doctor to date this novel covers Seasons 12-18.

Timelords Thoughts.
I make no attempt to hide the fact Tom Baker is my Doctor as Tom for me dominated the part & was the best actor to ever play the part although there all splendid chap's Tom brought out that alien quality out of his interpretation of the Timelord.

This Handbook includes a wealth of information about Tom's Seven year run from a highly amusing Q & A archive interview chapter that has Tom at his eccentric best to a excellent overview of Tom's 41 Tv adventures & reviewed by the Three authors Howe, Stammers, Walker.

This Handbook covers transmission dates & ratings & also features a behind the scenes chapter on The Brain Of Morbius adventure & discusses the Fourth Doctor era in general including any released merchandise of the times.

This is well detailed & brilliantly researched by the author's Howe, Stammers, Walker & a excellent read full of great trivia & information on the Fourth Doctor era.

Surely an update of this book is due as Tom has recently reprised the role in several BBC & Big Finish Fourth Doctor audiobooks & cameos in the 50th Anniversary story Day Of The Doctor.

Yet this is still a highly recommended purchase for fan's of the Fourth Doctor & a nostalgic read back in time.

Timelord Rating.
10/10
