4.0 out of 5 stars Great romance and some very intense action, 6 Aug 2012
This review is from: Chaos Burning (Bound by Magick Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm not sure if Chaos Burning the second instalment of Lauren Dane's Bound by Magick could be read as a stand alone, I started it pretty much straight after finishing Heart Of Darkness so was familiar with the set up of Clan Owen and the threat that has been building. I'm a slave to a series order so I would recommend you read Heart of Darkness first.

Mages have been kidnapping witches, draining them of their powers and killing them, they seems to be organised and controlled by a seriously scary unknown entity. Clan Owen is now under the leadership of Meriel who has requested the assistance of Lark the hunter from Clan Gennessee who has more experience of training and protecting clan witches. Lark is colourful, smart, feisty and completely kick ass and is therefore not Simon the 600 year old Lycan wolf shifters type. He wears designer gear to work out whereas Lark shops in thrift stores, dyes her hair various colours and wears knitted socks on her arms.

Two things I really enjoyed about Chaos Burning- I loved that Lark and Simon were friends first, there's no instalove here (OK maybe a bit of insta lust but that's totally acceptable Simon is a good looking Lycan Prince after all) instead their relationship developed slowly, I still knew it was going to happen but it slow in a good way. Lark starts to open up to Simon about her strained relationship with her sister and he takes her to the other side of the Veil to meet his Lycan family. I also really liked that Simon respected Lark's kick-ass chick status whilst still remaining protective of her as all good alpha's should. Their partnership seemed very equal and that really worked for me.

So I loved the romance but I also loved all the action. The threat of the Magister had me seriously gnawing on my fingernails, it was intense and downright scary because it was never going to be defeated easily.

Scary stuff and hot romance what more could you possibly ask for? The Bound by Magick series is well worth a read and you have plenty of time as the third instalment Going Under isn't out until February 2013.

This review is from: Chaos Burning (Bound by Magick Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Chaos Burning is book 2 in the Bound by Magick series, and its a good book with great leads and back up characters, it took me a few chapters to get into this one, but once I got to around chapter 5, I was hooked, I prefered book one as the action started from the first few pages and Chaos Burning took a bit longer for me to get moving but it was a good book well worth reading although I would read book one first or I think all the witch laws and other info will be a bit much to take in, it was great to see old characters back from Heart of Darkness book one and Nell and William from What happens in Vegas after dark, I like that Lauren Dane always keeps other characters in her series around so you can read about whats happening with them.

Lark Jaansen, is a hunter in Clan Gennessee, and is asked too come and help with the war started in book one against Witches and other, others are being kidnapped and killed for their magic, as she is having problems with her sister back home since her sisters boyfriend made a pass at her, she agrees. When she meets Simon Leviathan, alpha Lycian and shared owner of Heart of Darkness, with his best friend Dominic (from book one), she knows shes meet her match they start of as good friends and realise there is more to their relationship but they discover the murders and kidnappings are down to a entity older than recorded history, and that the stories they were told about the spirt as kids to frighten them is real and has returned. Finding him is their first problam then surviving him is their next.

I loved Simon in book one and still like him in book two hes a typical Alpha and when he realises Larks his mate he goes all out to get her and keep her, and Lark was fab in the book because she has her kick ass side and a softer side too good book look foward to book three which I think is Gages book, my only moan BRING IT OUT ON KINDLE, I had this pre ordered and it went from being released on the kindle format to not, so I had to buy the paperback version would of prefered to have it on the kindle with book one this seems to be happening a lot lately with kindle books and its driving me nuts!

4.0 out of 5 stars kick ass paranormal romance,Better than first book!4.5 stars, 3 Nov 2013

This review is from: Chaos Burning (Bound by Magick Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
this is the second book in Lauren Dane's 'Bound By Magick' series.i thought the first book was pretty good (though i wasn't bowled over by it),but this installment was way better.the first book set the scene and foundation for the world the author has created, this book ran with it and has made it a great new and compelling series.with that being said i would urge readers to read this series in order,it could possibly be read as a stand alone, but i feel that having the back story to this book would make it a better read as readers wouldn't have to learn of the world (clans, ranks, types of paranormal's,main players etc) and could better follow the story.
the characterization in this book was brilliant.i loved the leads, especially the heroine Lark. she was not your stereotypical commando girl.she was of average looks, with questionable dress sense and could handle herself just fine without a butch and aggressive nature, and the need to act like a male just because of her profession.she was also very witty and did make me laugh several times.it was also great that she didn't change her character through the book, yes she had a soft side, but she also stuck true to who she was and what she wanted to do.
i feel in lust/love with the hero Simon.he also is not your stereotypical lead.yes he's a sexy macho alpha male, but he also supports Lark and doesn't constantly try to change her and her choice of profession, instead its what makes him fall harder for her.i love that the two were friends before lovers, the romance didn't feel rushed or forced, but rather more genuine.
the book was also action packed with a imaginative story and was well paced.there is a dose of all the good stuff here(great characters, sizzling sexy parts, action, sorrow, witty banter etc).so if your into a gritty action packed paranormal romance, with refreshing characters and a great story you'll probably like this one.i did and like i said i wasn't bowled over by the first book.the next book in this series is Gage's story, which i have already purchased, hope its as good!
series order:
1. Heart of Darkness (2011)
2. Chaos Burning (2012)
3. Going Under (2013)
4. Wild Darkness (2013)
