Mrs. B. Salter-Murison (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Unmentionable Murder (Last Hurrah for the WWII Manor House Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
I wondered whether this book had been written by an American for Americans. This is no slur on Americans. It's just that there are so many things wrong with the author's description of English village life during WWII that I wondered how in heaven's name she'd found an editor to pass it. Only one who'd never set foot in the UK, I guess.

It's soon clear that this is one of a series. Lots of "cosy" authors write series - MC Beaton and her Agatha Raisin books, for example - but few do so as clumsily as this. It felt as if there were great chunks missing from the story.

Our heroine is the lady of the manor and the murder has occurred on her patch and to one of "her" people. The Unmentionables of the title are knickers/panties, which are being nicked by a villager. The hunt for the thief makes a light-hearted interlude in the rather bleaker story of the murder.

The author appears to believe that "lady of the manor" is an official position somewhere between a police officer and a magistrate. The wartime atmosphere is equally unconvincing.

To be perfectly frank, there's so much wrong with this book I couldn't recommend it to anyone. If you like murders set in the English countryside why not try The Beckoning Lady or pretty much anything by Patricia Wentworth (sadly out of print, but mistress of the cosy murder).
