I was a little disappointed when this book arrived in September 2010. This was because the advertising blurb on Amazon said it was published in 2007, and I assumed it would tell the story of the M1 Abrams from its inception in 1972 all the way up through the Gulf War and Kosovo to Operation Iraqi Freedom. In fact whether this edition was published in 2007 or not is not stated in the book but it does quote a copyright date of 1987. What you actually get is a fascinating insight into US tank development and production from about the late sixties to approximately 1986/7, and once I accepted this I really enjoyed the book. However, it would have been truely a great book if it had taken us on the journey to OIF to demonstrate that the earlier decisions taken during the development of the tank were sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get into the inner workings of the US Army, 20 Nov. 2004
I first read Orr Kellys book some time ago, but I keep picking it up and re-reading it. The book details and I mean really details, the long, tortuous process the Army and its suppliers went through to aquire arguably one of the best MBT's (Tank) in the world, the Abrams M1. Starting with a detailed history of the tank and then following the conception and development including the incorporation of iinovations from other countries: English armou, German gun etc.
The book is well written and gives a flavour of how the buying "system" works in the real world.
Kelly writes in an unbiased and thought provoking way, giving technical details but not losing the readers interest.
A good read and a useful reference source.
