I was very disappointed with the Chinese characters as these appear on my Kindle. I don't know whether they would be as small and unclear in the paper version of this text. I tried increasing the size of the font (which you can do on the Kindle) but unfortunately the Chinese characters did not increase in size only the surrounding English print. Another issue I have is with the paucity of the index so that I found it difficult to find information about words to express 'want', wish' etc. I did like the way that the second part of the book gives lots of information about the social requirements in the Chinese language with lots of examples of the different ways to handle social settings and the language associated with these.

When you come across a grammar this good, you can't help thinking it's a shame that the publishers couldn't do a better job. A superbly clear and simple guide to modern Mandarin spoilt by details. The copy-editing is terrible--there are so many little typographical errors that should have been picked up at the proof-reading stage, and the indexing is far from adequate. But worse than all this is the shoddy binding. My paperback was always going to fall apart in the middle and pages are coming out all over the place. I'd still give the book 4 stars, though. To benefit fully you do need the workbook as well.

I like the book, but it's not suitable for laying the foundations if you are a beginner level. It will be excellent supporting material for intermediate and advanced level.

If you are like me, not sure about your "le" "guo" or "ba" then you need this book! I am absolutely delighted with its clear presentation. Well worth the money!

I used this book as part of my beginner's course and did not find it particularly useful. Although it gives a lot of examples of each grammar point, it doesn't actually provide any explanations, so all you are left with is a list of sentences - rather like a dictionary of grammar terms. It may be useful if used with specific course books and a teacher to explain it, or for more advanced learners, but as a standalone book or for self-study, it does not get my vote.

Unfortunately for me I was to lazy and unsystematic in learning my grammatical 'abc's and thus never finished this book, but of what I did read, it was concise, to the point, beautifully presented, and offered good examples to illustrate the point in every aspect of grammar you will encounter in your HSKs and what not. Learning Chinese? Just shout "take my money" and buy it.

I'm studying Mandarin, and one of the hardest things to get accustomed to is the grammar and sentence structure! Thankfully, I bought this book and it is perfect for me: Easy to follow, well laid out, and EXAMPLES of the rules! I've suggested it to all my friends who are also learning, and I'd suggest it to anyone else.

A great book - structured in two ways. Firstly the grammar forms, and then by functions, so you can access it in either way... i.e. what is a pronoun, or how do I say hello. Very useful. The seller also recommended the matching workbook, which I didn't know existed, so that may be just as good too.

A great book. Clear, well laid out, accessible. Very readable, and not at all like a textbook in feel. Presents grammar "classically", then provides lots of sections on situational uses of words, constructions, and so on, that fills in a lot of gaps in knowledge. Highly recommend this book.

This book is meant for intermediate Mandarin students, I would definitely recommend it because the structure is very easy to understand but at the same time it covers many things--great part is that is in Pin Yin
