5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent introductory text to transport planning, 25 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Transport Policy and Planning in Great Britain (The Natural and Built Environment Series) (Paperback)
As a (hopefully) future transport planner this is an excellent introductory text to the subject. From how the transport system developed in the UK and the first turn pikes, to an insight on New Labour recent planned proposals of introducing a national road charging system.

It explores all of the key developments in a logical manor allowing the reader to understand how and why our transport behaviour has shifted and the car has become the favoured dominant form of mass transportation, in addition to exploring privatisation of (parts of) the network, successes and failures, it really grasps the reader's attention to think critically about the current situation we are facing in regards to public transport.

The planning process is set out clearly, although slightly dated in that the situation in respect to certain non-government departments has and are changing in light of the new coalition government; although the book certainly still gives good depth and the importance of New Labours role in our current transport network.

A few points. Although the whole book is not a "hard read", rather enjoyable and insightful for the most part, the planning section and "processes" and "procedures" involved in such might take a bit more effort to digest if you are not already over familiar with this area, often requiring a glance back to the contents to remember what that abbreviation stood for, although nicely the author continuously directs readers to the chapters in which more detail can be found when making referring in passing to a given issue or subject.

Well worth the buy and the most recently published overview I could find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Headicar, 23 Dec 2009
This review is from: Transport Policy and Planning in Great Britain (The Natural and Built Environment Series) (Paperback)
I'm biased because I had the privelage of being lectured/tutored by Peter Headicar, and when I read this book it's like being back in one of his classes - an experience I always enjoyed. If you're a transport planner - past, present or future - read this book!!
