4.0 out of 5 stars Sensible, scientific, sensitive and superb poetry workbook, 20 July 2010
This review is from: Writing Poetry (Paperback)
The book is a series of experiments with poetry. This is complimented by sensitive, serious, and in depth discussion of the process of creating poems with some awesome poets.

The dialogs are dense and full of ideas and practices. The experiments are sensible, suggestive, and not always describe-able using words starting with S.

A really fine guide for poetry practices!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Poetry Course in a Book., 22 Oct 2012
By
This review is from: Writing Poetry (Paperback)
This is not just a book to read it is a book to be worked through over a longish period of time. I took six months working slowly, using the exercises and keeping a notebook in which to record the results. I hope I achieved what the book intends which is to produce a body of work that achieves a competence in writing poetry. As the author points out poetry is a discipline and the best way to learn about writing poetry is to do it. This is an ideal book, following seven stages, to assist you in the process of starting writing.I found the exercises inventive and absorbing and as an added bonus there were a series of interviews at the end of each section conducted with practicing poets which were highly illuminating about the craft of poetry writing. The author is a highly skilled poet in his own right and teaches creative writing at Newcastle University and his depth of experience is evident in the book throughout. As someone who has now completed a formal course in creative writing I can recommend this work without hesitation and I shall certainly be using many of the exercises in it again.

This review is from: Writing Poetry (Paperback)
W N Herbert looks at seven aspects of writing poetry: drafting; line; voice; imagery; rhyme; form and theme. Each aspect is discussed and various exercises given which lead to poems being written. In each section there is also an interview about various issues with a prominent poet.
Even if you don't want to write poetry this is an enjoyable book to read but it is also an excellent jumping off point for the beginner writer.
