5.0 out of 5 stars good resource
I found this book to be a really useful resource. I am a native speaker of Arabic and I found the mix of dialects particularly intriguing as I am currently working on dialect studies. The format of the book can be a little difficult to follow at first when you want to look up a particular word to see if it's there, but after using it a couple of times I've got the hang of...

By far the best frequency dictionary of Arabic and the only one in print as far as I know, and the only one that takes some account of spoken Arabic, so I gladly bought it. However the vocabulary of spoken Arabic is grossly underrepresented in the corpus. 4.0 out of 5 stars For elementary Arabic students, 25 Oct. 2011
This review is from: A Frequency Dictionary of Arabic: Core Vocabulary for Learners (Routledge Frequency Dictionaries) (Paperback)
For students of Arabic, this frequency dictionary is an excellent way of accumulating vocabulary. The sentence examples are a bit odd every here and there, but they do the trick. Words are also listed according to word class (most frequent adverbs, adjectives etc) which is also helpful.

By far the best frequency dictionary of Arabic and the only one in print as far as I know, and the only one that takes some account of spoken Arabic, so I gladly bought it. However the vocabulary of spoken Arabic is grossly underrepresented in the corpus. They could have added Arabic films from different regions, (and even pop-music), as one additional source, maybe with a slight additional emphasis on Egyptian films. That would have given added weight to the vocabulary of spoken Arabic. I think having three sources in the corpus for spoken Arabic: the unscripted speech data + postings on internet discussion forums + vocabulary in films, would have made the frequency list more accurate. In fact even more sources would have been needed for spoken Arabic, for the frequency list to be more genuine. In my opinion the colloquial vocabulary that is common to most of the dialects is perhaps the most interesting vocabulary in the Arabic language as a whole, counting MSA and dialects as two different sides of the same coin.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for arabic learners, 19 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Frequency Dictionary of Arabic: Core Vocabulary for Learners (Routledge Frequency Dictionaries) (Paperback)
This is an excellent tool for already experienced Arabic learners. Examples and theme lists help very much. Need to know the root of each word though in order to navigate through this book. It helps me a lot!
