5.0 out of 5 stars A personal view
An authoritative and detailed review of a very complex subject. It is written with great objectivity, insight and balance. Some of the sentences are clumsily constructed which tends to impede the flow of the narrative. Nonetheless, it is a work of great importance and an essential source of information for serious students of this era. Very highly recommended.

M.R.D Foot does it again - very detailed but gives the reader a broad understanding of what is was like to be in SOE, part of SOE and all the difficulties experienced. As a member of the SAS himself he recalls from first hand and has researched in dififcult times when this information was still "secret".

This is an immensely detailed study of SOE in France and is written in a very readable style. For many people the fascination with SOE remains strong even though it is a time of long ago. For them I would strongly recommend this book.
I would have liked Professor Foot to have spent more time on why so many agents acted so carelessly and were consequently lost to their cause.

Some of the sentences are clumsily constructed which tends to impede the flow of the narrative, also the excessive use of abbreviations makes following the narrative dificult. Far better to use the complete words as there are so many abbreviations that to try and remember them all and not have to keep refereing to the abbreviation listing is impossible.
