This review is from: Sir Robert Peel: Statesmanship, Power and Party (Lancaster Pamphlets) (Paperback)
I purchased this book when revising for my AS level History module and read it in the space of a few days. It provides a comprehensive overview of Peel's life as a politician, covering every angle of his skills and actions. Both of his terms in office, his handling of the problems in Ireland, and his part in the repeal of the Corn Laws are all considered, as well as his personal qualities as a party leader, not just a Prime Minister. This book allows you to explore all aspects of Peel's Ministry and helps you come to a reasoned conclusion about his successes and failures as a national and party leader. It is comprehensive, broad, and allows you to see the links between many different factors he dealt with, and as such makes perfect background reading for any history student studying 19th century British political history.
