5.0 out of 5 stars Smashing aid for students (and teachers)
Ways of Reading is a well-established and invaluable textbook that provides students with the tools to analyse and interpret the meanings of literary and non-literary texts. The text is divided into six sections which are in turn separated into self-contained units, with their own activities and notes for further reading. These cover such aspects of criticism as language...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ways of Reading
This book looked ideal, however, the way it is structured makes it inconvenient to follow, and it seems to me that it is incomplete. Did the authors get fed up with it half way through?
For instance, there are clearly set out Units and subject headings, but when you read into the subject the text refers you to another subject heading in another unit - which refers...

This review is from: Ways of Reading: Advanced Reading Skills for Students of English Literature (Paperback)
This book is full of excellent material about how to approach the reading of any form of text. It is broken down into self-sufficient sections which can be read separately and thus it serves as an excellent reference book for specific points concerning the reading and also the writing of literature and related genres. This saves it as it is not very readable and can appear intimidating at first glance. However, it is worth persevering with reading it as it is comprehensive in the best sense.

The text is divided into six sections which are in turn separated into self-contained units, with their own activities and notes for further reading. These cover such aspects of criticism as language variation, poetic uses of language, narrative, and media texts. Overall this is a must-buy for students wishing to succeed in AQA and OCR A-level English Literature and Language.

For instance, there are clearly set out Units and subject headings, but when you read into the subject the text refers you to another subject heading in another unit - which refers you to another subject heading in another unit.... By the time you have ploughed through all the cross referencing you've forgotten what it was you were reading about in the first place!
Also, there are activities to complete at the end of each unit: great for testing that you have understood what you have read, unless of course the 'Appendix: notes on activities' only provides answers to Unit 1 and Unit 3. What about the rest?

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and essential reading for literature students, 25 Mar 2010
This review is from: Ways of Reading: Advanced Reading Skills for Students of English Literature (Paperback)
Fantastic book with many techniques of literary analysis covered in a concise manner.
Each idea is presented with a clear example to help make the idea tangible, and in the context of other analytic tools.
The cross referencing doesn't obstruct the flow of the work but it does reinforce the fact that literary analysis is not an isolated sum of parts.
For students, an essential resource before and during close reading work.
