This is a good introduction to Fariclough's CDA aimed at people from a non-linguistic background. The examples of applications tend to focus on conversation analysis and analysis of media (e.g. newspaper reports), but the theoretical stuff in the first half of the book is strong, and there are some useful tips on how language is structured by, and structures, power relations. Well worth a read, but best read in conjunction with the 2010 edition of his other book, 'Critical Discourse Analysis'.

Of the many books written on the subject, N.F. has written a book long enough to contain the important details and focused enough to avoid repetition. I personally found it of use as a student and recommend it to others.

I find critical discourse analysis to be very daunting, however this textbook explains things in a simple way, with a good framework for carrying out CDA. If you are starting out on textual analysis, get this.
