5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful coverage.
Many students will find enough in this book to enable them to gain a sufficient understanding of the complex and rather indeterminate subject which is 'modernism.'
I consider it clearly presented and engagingly discussed. I have no hesitation in recommending this text.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good basic starting point
This is a good starting point for those who know very little of Modernism and need a good basic point. It is ideal for students who are not that are confused by the subject but require basic definitions.
It works a bit like a beginners dictionary to Modernism, providing very general and not very deep definitions or descriptions of many of the great modernist works...

This is a good starting point for those who know very little of Modernism and need a good basic point. It is ideal for students who are not that are confused by the subject but require basic definitions.
It works a bit like a beginners dictionary to Modernism, providing very general and not very deep definitions or descriptions of many of the great modernist works and writers.
If you just want a brief idea of what Modernism is this is the book for you, but if you are wishing to develop any knowledge of modernism, avoid at all costs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book, 26 Jan. 2013
While I couldn't say the book is badly researched, it is frustrating because Childs argues poorly and does not write clearly enough to unambiguously say very much on his topics.

It does read well, but I would hate to have to write an essay on Modernism based on just this book - even if it does offer lots of good pointers to other sources.
