Michael Chanan’s analysis of the prehistory and early history of British cinema is insightful and challenging, in both cases because it presents new ideas and data across a range from the technology, aesthetics, and the predecessors of film in terms of popular culture. Marxists and psychoanalytic perspectives are presented, and particular characteristics of film examined, notably that “it can be seen simultaneously and successively by many audiences and is not removed from the market by the process of consumption.“ A thoughtful and interesting book.
