This review is from: Gender Reversals and Gender Cultures: Anthropological and Historical Perspectives (Paperback)
This is a tremendously throught-provoking investigation of gender issues. Today we live in an era in which gender-associated behavioural traits are increasingly seen to be operating independently of biologically-defined gender. However, as this book demonstrates, there's a lot more to the serious study of role reversals than simply watching your Uncle Bruce in a sequinned frock on a Saturday night- as he belts out the Madonna hit "Hanky Panky" to the flamboyant inhabitants of a niche nightclub! Within this volume, the author takes an all-compassing approach, that includes explorations of some rather interesting precedents within history.

PS. For further research into examples of the blurring of gender roles, I would strongly recommend seeking out the rather candid film 'Slüts with Nuts Take on Chaps with Flaps'. Admittedly, it doesn't explore the political issues at heart in any particularly advanced depth- but rarely has the reversal of traditional identities been depicted quite so explicitly!
