5.0 out of 5 stars A true pioneer !, 3 Feb 2010
This review is from: Joan's Book: Joan Littlewood's Peculiar History as She Tells It (Biography and Autobiography) (Paperback)
For anyone interested in recent history of the theatre - this book is a must !!!

With boundless energy, and a real zest for 'theatre' anywhere that it could be

initiated, this book recounts the trials and tribulations ( and sometimes real

financial hardship), that Joan Littlewood, and her ever-changing troupe of players

endured.A character who often wasn't supported by the Arts Council in her tours,

she nevertheless made her mark at the Theatre Royal (Stratford East), and left us

with such evocative and moving works as 'Oh What a Lovely War!'. Watch out too,for

some of the people she employed went on to become 'big names'.

A colourful,'driven' character - this account is a detailed and warm record of her

unique improvisational style that was to influence so many people in the theatre.
