This review is from: Lee Hall Plays: 1: Cooking with Elvis/Bollocks/Spoonface Steinberg/I Love You, Jimmy Spud/Wittgenstein on Tyne/Genie/Two's Company/Childr: Cooking ... Jimmy Spud v. 1 (Contemporary Dramatists) (Paperback)
That about sums it up...there are some great plays in here, and others that are lesser works, but what's truly brilliant about this edition is that you get a real sense of Lee Hall's voice and scope as a writer, in this cross-section of his body of work. He's undoubtedly a talented writer, and the fact that this collection contains radio plays, stage plays and a screenplay illustrates what a master of the craft Hall is, managing to turn his hand to several mediums prolifically and with great grace and skill.

One unexpected gem here is 'Cooking With Elvis' which I confess I haven't seen performed, but as a text is delightful...funny, moving, dark, at times uncomfortable. 'Spoonface Steinberg' is a well written radio monologue, though I fail to see why it has been given such legendary status amongst the back catalogue of BBC Radio 4 plays. There are, sadly, very few Radio 4 plays that strike any chord with me at all, and whilst 'Spoonface' is an admirable effort, it does at times feel rather overly written and a little strained.

book was bought for my daughter who needed it for her students course. The book arrived too late for her to read before she went to see the play however she still enjoyed the book and uses it for her course
